Modern Idolatry


One of the Ten Commandments says to not worship other Gods. But in today's "diety-free at all costs" mentality, does this still apply? How can we be accused of worshiping other gods if there is no God, much less "gods"?

We worship self, and what "self" wants. Proverbs 1:24 describes this very thing. Wisdom (as an aspect of God) calls out in the street:
Proverbs 1:24 "I called, and you refused to listen. I stretched out my hands to you, and no one paid attention. 25 You ignored all my advice. You did not want me to warn you.


Many times, we don't want to be corrected. Worshiping God is obedience. But if we don't obey... if we choose to obey someone/something else that goes directly against what God has commanded yout to do -- even ourselves -- then we are practicing idolatry. If the TV schedule keeps us from obeying, we have placed it above God. If we are too lazy, we have placed ourselves over God.

So here's the pointed question of the day : Do you need to repent to God for the sin of Idolatry? What about your quiet time alone with God? Are you maintaining it faithfully? How about being obedient to God minute-by-minute? Has something else asked you to give your time, too? Did you choose it instead of time with God and his teaching, instruction and obedience? If so, you need to confess this to God. In short, we've become our own "American Idol."

So, what happens to the "foolish" or "guilible" who do not want to be corrected?
Proverbs 1:26 I will laugh at your calamity. I will make fun of you when panic strikes you, ... 29 because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD. 30 They refused my advice. They despised my every warning. 31 They will eat the fruit of their lifestyle. They will be stuffed with their own schemes.


Don't be foolish. Listen to God, and accept his correction, rebuke and warnings. They will save you much heartache in the end. Sin is pleasurable for a season, but results in pain and heartache for a lifetime. Rebuke is painful for a moment, but brings about peace forever.

    Hi Jerry and Cheryl too....

    Well guess who was wide awake, well not really WIDE awake, just awake enough to get up and express milk to take to Gidget and who then felt compelled to come out and see what you'd been thinking? *lol*

    I have been pondering this SAME EXACT thing for some time now since I found out my kids (my older ones in Seattle) are huge fans of American Idol. It never has set well with me and seemed a direct violation of one of Gods Laws.

    In my eyes, and this may seem extreme,it's right up there with Barbie Dolls (who yes, when you think about it, most girls idolize yet we all had them whilst growing up) and now those stupid Bratz dolls!

    I have never watched AI for the very reason that it's tone and title are blasphemous. And I see no reason for kids to have something else to attempt to aspire to that isn't Godly. Isn't there enough out there already?

    AI is just one small example of modern day idolatry. If one really got to thinking about it, there are myraid things in our day to day lives that are probably tantamount to the same things. And it's enough to just get through the day and keep your focus on what's important and give your praise to the ONE who really and truly should be front and center.

    Well for me anyhow. And especially these last 5 days.

    For me, there is no other idol. I see every day when I look at my precious baby girl, the power, grace and majesty of the one true God and in looking at her, I see his love, his mercy and his compassion.

    And that's enough for me.
